What is FFMI and Why It Matters

FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) is a measurement that evaluates your lean muscle mass relative to your height. Unlike BMI, which doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, FFMI specifically focuses on muscle mass, providing a more accurate assessment of your physique development.

How FFMI Is Calculated

The FFMI formula takes your weight, height, and body fat percentage into account:

  1. First, we calculate your fat-free mass (FFM) = Weight × (1 - (Body Fat % / 100))
  2. Then, we calculate your FFMI = FFM / (Height in meters)²
  3. For more precision, we use the adjusted FFMI formula for taller individuals
Note: The adjusted FFMI formula includes a height normalization factor to account for the fact that taller individuals typically have lower FFMI values.

Understanding FFMI Standards and Percentiles

FFMI Range (Men) FFMI Range (Women) Classification
Below 18 Below 15 Below Average
18-20 15-17 Average
20-22 17-19 Above Average
22-23 19-20 Excellent
23-26 20-22 Superior
26-28 22-24 Exceptional
Above 28 Above 24 Rare/Elite

Note: Research by scientists like Dr. Eric Helms and Menno Henselmans suggests that the natural limit for men is typically around 25-26, with genetic outliers possibly reaching 27-28.
